For one of the Flickr groups that I sometimes pull themes-of-the-day from, the theme of the day is "Hat Monday". And I have this amazing hat that's fluffy all over and really warm that I wanted to use. And I wanted to use a shallow depth of field so that the tip of the hat is in focus but my eyes are out of focus. I played around with one shot and did several edits, and only got to this one completely accidentally because I messed up all the levels so much I couldn't get back to where I was before, so I just kept going. I'm really happy with it. I accomplished what I set out to accomplish, in the words of a friend :)
